I have been working on the same song “Longing” for the last 3 months. It finally came together this week. Perhaps it has to do the glimmer of hope that I and so many of my friends felt this week with the election result from Alabama. So here are the song lyrics. I will share a recording as soon as I finalize the melody.
Longing
by Eric H. F. Law
I am longing for
For a day of seeing without tears
I am yearning for
For a way of living without fears
There’s a man
With a gadget in his hand
And in less than 20 words
Can make my country look absurd
There’s a man
Smiling men around him stand
With the scribble of his pen
They’d come and take away my friends
That’s why
I am longing for
For a day of seeing without tears
I am yearning for
For a way of living without fears
There are men
Pushing fear and fake defense
Rather fund machines for war
Than health and shelters for the poor
There are men
Caught up in their own pretense
They’ve let poison in the air
Now water’s rising ev’ry where
That’s why
I am longing for
For a day of seeing without tears
I am yearning for
For a way of living without fears
A day when ev’ryone’s free
And no one’s bullied to conform
A day with no threats of war
No shields, no armored uniforms
And no more man-made angry storms
A day when truthfulness reigns
And grace and kindness is the norm
Come and dream with me
For that day of seeing without tears
Come and search with me
For the way of living without fears.
When we can all say no
No to all the bullies and their threats
Instead we can all say yes
Yes to friends and lovers, our safety net
Come and pray with me
Pray for grace and courage without cease
Come and walk with me
Walk the way of justice and of peace
